# What is ipamorelin?

Updated November 2, 2026. Source: https://whatisipamorelin.com/

## Short answer

Ipamorelin is a lab-made peptide of five amino acids that prompts the pituitary gland to release more of the body’s own growth hormone.[1] It is not in any FDA-approved drug, and in 2024 FDA’s compounding advisers voted against adding it to the list of substances pharmacies can use.[1][2] Its main human trial, in bowel surgery patients, found no significant benefit over placebo.[6]

## Latest news: HHS’s draft peptide policy names six peptides. Ipamorelin is not one of them.

October 30, 2026.

HHS published a notice on October 30, 2026 announcing a **draft** policy on compounding certain peptides.[9] **Ipamorelin and CJC-1295 are not on its list.**[10]

The list has six peptides: BPC-157, epitalon, KPV, MOTS-c, semax and TB-500.[10] For those six, HHS says it does not intend to take enforcement action against state-licensed pharmacies, federal facilities or licensed physicians that compound them, as long as every condition in the policy is met.[10] One condition is a single active ingredient, so blends are left out.[10]

The policy is not binding on HHS or the public, and comments are due by November 13, 2026 on docket HHS-OASH-2026-0496.[9] TIME described the moment as “The Peptide Rush Has Begun.”[11] Ipamorelin’s record is separate: FDA advisers voted against adding it to the compounding list in 2024.[2]

- **Ipamorelin:** Not among the six peptides the policy names.[10]
- **CJC-1295:** Also not among the six.[10]
- **Blends:** Only products with a single active ingredient from the list qualify.[10]

## Quick fit check

If any of these apply, mention them in the assessment:

- **You have a pituitary problem:** FDA says ipamorelin would not be expected to raise growth hormone in people with absent pituitaries or severely damaged growth hormone cells.[1] Raise this with the provider.
- **You want a treatment FDA has approved:** FDA says there are no FDA-approved drug products containing ipamorelin.[1] FDA-approved treatments do exist for growth hormone deficiency, such as somatropin.[1]
- **You have diabetes or high blood sugar:** FDA is concerned that ipamorelin could carry risks like those of approved growth hormone products, including glucose intolerance and diabetes.[1] Raise this with the provider.
- **You have or have had cancer:** Approved growth hormone product labels warn of an increased risk of tumors, and FDA is concerned similar risks could apply to ipamorelin.[1] Raise this with the provider.
- **You compete in a drug-tested sport:** The World Anti-Doping Agency’s 2026 list names both ipamorelin and CJC-1295 as prohibited.[12]

## Key facts

- **What it is:** A synthetic peptide of five amino acids that acts as a ghrelin mimetic and growth hormone secretagogue.[1]
- **Not to be confused with:** Pamorelin, a brand of triptorelin.[7] Triptorelin is a GnRH analogue used for conditions such as prostate cancer and early puberty.[8]
- **FDA status:** Not in any FDA-approved drug.[1] FDA reviewed it and proposed leaving it off the list of substances that can be used in pharmacy compounding.[1]
- **Advisory committee:** In October 2024, FDA’s compounding advisers voted 0 in favor, 12 against, with 1 abstaining, on each form of ipamorelin.[2]
- **Best human trial:** A phase 2 trial after bowel surgery found no significant difference from placebo.[6]
- **Half-life:** About 2 hours when infused into healthy men, with growth hormone peaking at about 40 minutes.[5]

## Ipamorelin’s record so far

| When | What happened |
| --- | --- |
| 1998 | Researchers described ipamorelin as a selective growth hormone releaser, based on lab, rat and pig studies.[4] |
| 1999 | A dose-escalation study in healthy men measured how ipamorelin moves through the body and raises growth hormone.[5] |
| 2014 | A phase 2 trial in 114 bowel surgery patients found no significant benefit over placebo.[6] |
| September 2023 | FDA placed ipamorelin acetate in category 2, its group of bulk substances that may present significant safety risks, for outsourcing facilities.[3] |
| October 2024 | FDA proposed against listing it, and its advisory committee voted 0 to 12, with 1 abstaining.[1][2] |
| October 2026 | HHS published a draft policy covering six other peptides.[9][10] |

## How ipamorelin works

- **It mimics ghrelin:** Ipamorelin activates ghrelin receptors, mainly in the hypothalamus, which leads the pituitary to release growth hormone.[1]
- **It needs a working pituitary:** FDA says ipamorelin would not be expected to raise growth hormone in people with absent pituitaries or severely damaged growth hormone cells.[1]
- **It is selective in animals:** In pigs, ipamorelin did not raise the stress hormones ACTH and cortisol beyond what the body’s own releasing hormone did, even at very high doses.[4] FDA also describes it as having no major effect on those hormones.[1]
- **It acts in short bursts:** In healthy men given an infusion, it caused a single rise in growth hormone that peaked at about 40 minutes and then fell to negligible levels.[5]

## What the evidence shows

- **Recovery after bowel surgery:** In a randomized phase 2 trial, the median time to a first tolerated meal was 25.3 hours on ipamorelin and 32.6 hours on placebo, a difference that was not statistically significant.[6] The drug was given by IV, and the authors called the study small.[6]
- **Growth hormone deficiency:** FDA concluded that evidence of effectiveness is limited for any route, with no data supporting the injected-under-the-skin route proposed for compounding.[1] Professional guidelines do not discuss it for this use.[1]
- **Muscle, fat loss, sleep and anti-aging:** Clinics market ipamorelin for uses like these.[1] FDA’s review found no additional data on its effectiveness for other clinical uses.[1]
- **With CJC-1295:** Clinics market the two together.[1] A 2026 review reported improved muscle force with the pair in mice with steroid-related muscle loss, and said those findings are limited to animal studies.[14]

## Side effects and safety concerns

- **In the bowel surgery trial:** Low potassium (12.5% vs 3.4% on placebo), insomnia (10.7% vs 5.2%) and high blood sugar at discharge (14.3% vs 8.6%) were more common with ipamorelin.[1] Across all side effects combined, rates were 87.5% on ipamorelin and 94.8% on placebo.[6]
- **Deaths in that trial:** Two people given ipamorelin died after developing complications from their colon cancer surgery.[1] FDA says it is unclear whether the deaths were related to ipamorelin, but that they raise safety concerns.[1]
- **Immune reactions:** FDA is concerned that injected compounded ipamorelin could trigger immune reactions, because of possible clumping and impurities.[1][3]
- **Risks tied to growth hormone:** FDA is concerned about risks like those on approved growth hormone labels, including tumors, glucose intolerance and diabetes, raised pressure in the skull, fluid retention and pancreatitis.[1]
- **Injected use is largely unstudied:** FDA found no safety or effectiveness data for the under-the-skin route proposed for compounding.[1] It says it lacks enough information to know whether the drug would cause harm by certain other injected routes.[3]
- **CJC-1295, the other half of the blend:** FDA has identified serious adverse events with CJC-1295, including increased heart rate and a whole-body blood vessel widening reaction, and calls clinical data limited.[3] Two trials in healthy adults reported no serious adverse reactions.[13]

## Common questions

### Is ipamorelin the same as Pamorelin?

No. Ipamorelin is a growth hormone peptide.[1] Pamorelin is an Ipsen brand of triptorelin, a medicine used for conditions such as prostate cancer.[7][8]

### Is ipamorelin FDA-approved?

No. FDA says there are no FDA-approved drug products containing ipamorelin.[1] Its compounding advisers voted against adding it to the 503A bulks list in October 2024, with no votes in favor.[2]

### Can pharmacies compound ipamorelin?

FDA reviewed it and proposed leaving it off the 503A bulks list, and its advisers agreed.[1][2] FDA’s safety-risk page still lists it as a nominated substance that was withdrawn, and as category 2 for outsourcing facilities.[3] It is also not one of the six peptides in HHS’s draft policy.[10] Ask any provider or pharmacy how their product is sourced.

### Is ipamorelin HGH or a steroid?

Neither. It is a five-amino-acid peptide that stimulates the release of the body’s own growth hormone.[1]

### Does ipamorelin build muscle or burn fat?

Clinics market it that way, but FDA’s review found no additional effectiveness data beyond growth hormone deficiency and post-surgery bowel recovery, and limited evidence for those.[1]

### Why is ipamorelin paired with CJC-1295?

They act on different receptors: ipamorelin on ghrelin receptors, and CJC-1295 as a long-acting analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone.[1][13] A 2026 review said the pair’s muscle findings are limited to animal studies.[14]

### Is ipamorelin banned in sports?

Yes. The World Anti-Doping Agency’s 2026 Prohibited List names it among growth hormone secretagogues, and also lists CJC-1295.[12]
